While the recycling of goods and materials to increase efficiency and reduce waste has taken place throughout human history, an increasing focus on sustainability in the 21st century has seen more attention being given to the practice and philosophy of recycling. Recycling is a broad term with a wide focus, involving the reuse of raw items or the processing of used materials in order to create new products. There are a number of advantages to recycling, including the reduction of waste products, the reduction of raw material consumption, and the overall reduction of energy usage. Countries all around the world, involved in every aspect of industry and commerce, are finding that recycling is having a huge effect on their relationship with their waste, and in turn – their relationship with all of their resources.

Recycling is one of the key components in the “reduce, reuse, recycle” hierarchy that is marketed throughout the world. A number of industry bodies are using this model to redefine their relationship with resource management, in order to cut down on waste and increase overall efficiency. Individual operators are not automatically sending their waste materials to landfill, and are instead looking for clever and effective ways to reuse and recycle these materials. Many different products are already made from recycled materials, including glass, paper, metal, plastics, and textiles. Even within the electronics industry, a number of businesses have found ways to reuse and recycle various materials and components in order to cut down on their waste footprint.

Recycling programs exist for both individual consumers and within specific industries, the later of whom are often involved in extensive waste management programs. The allocation of recycling infrastructure and education, along with various subsidies and incentives for industry to cut down on their waste materials, are helping to change the relationship that people have with the very nature of disposal. Instead of rubbish disposal and waste being the default solution, many businesses are finding that it is in their best interests to reduce, reuse, and recycle as many of their materials as possible. As people all around the world become more focused on finding sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions to waste disposal, recycling is likely to have an even bigger impact on how people relate to their waste.
